Slovenian Traditional Cake, Prekmurje Gibanica [Layer Cake]Have a Slovenian Feast
Don’t forget to sample the local dishes and delicacies that Slovenians are mighty proud of! The dishes are mostly made of fresh produce, with strong Austro-German influences; these influences can be seen in the form of sauerkraut, apple strudel and grilled sausages.
Make sure that you try out some of the local Slovenian cheeses, which are very mild in flavor without sacrificing good quality. You can also get to see how these cheeses are made by visiting some of the cheese makers around the country, who will willingly welcome you and your loved ones.
Some of the best known Slovenian delicacies are the breads that are made and served during special occasions; most of these bread products are braided into wreaths or loaves, which give them a much more appealing look than other, much simpler-looking breads. Try out the struklji, a Slovenian bread product which can be made with savory meat and vegetables, or with sweet fillings.
Check out the wine selection that Slovenia has to offer, from crisp white wines (Renski and Laski Rizling), to full-bodied reds that come from the Kras Plateau region (Teran). Zganje, which is brandy produced from fruits, is commonly served in bars throughout the country – do try a glass or two when you get the chance to do so.
